A few months ago, I installed a toolbar for Mileage Plus Shopping Assistant. The bonus was the usual 500 or 1000 points for signing up and utilizing this feature. It wasn't half bad, but my employer removed it when doing an update, and I quickly forgot about it.
The thought came to mind: Promo sign-ups are like one night stands. Love 'em and leave 'em affairs. You sign up. You rush in without thinking. You get all giddy. You get the points (or don't even know whether or not you got the promo points, because... well, frankly you often forget to look back). Don't slam the door on the way out, please. And then it's out of sight out of mind, and on to the next promo.
Fast forward a few months. I just got this curious email from United Airlines, that the Mileage Plus Shopping Assistant is being discontinued effective January 10th.
This is what the e-mail says:
Dear Valued MileagePlus Shopping Member,
We are writing to let you know that the MileagePlus Shopping Assistant is being discontinued and will no longer be available as of January 10th, 2013.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Any miles earned via shopping or searching via the MileagePlus Shopping Assistant through January 9th, 2013 will be honored.
Please take a few moments now to uninstall The MileagePlus Shopping Assistant from your browser.
To Uninstall: Click The MileagePlus Shopping Assistant Icon in your Browser >> Click "Uninstall" in the menu >> Follow the prompts to complete the process.
While The MileagePlus Shopping Assistant will no longer be available, we are committed to delivering great offers when you shop online. You can take advantage of a wide variety of great offers at https://www.mileageplusshopping.com.
