Running Times Magazine - $5 for One Year Subscription!

Take advantage of this Special Pre-Summer Blowout Sale and subscribe to Running Times for only $5.00 plus FREE Delivery!

Here is the LINK.

I have never seen this magazine at a price this low.  I just purchased it, and the only proviso is that, before the transaction is complete, the website keeps asking you if you want to purchase various Rodale books.  Just keep pressing "no," if you are not interested in these additional items.

I note that the ad says that the special offer is good for one week only, but it does not say the beginning or end date of the offer.  I  would therefore recommend that you purchase this immediately if you are interested.

Free Kayak Pro App (Starbucks' "Pick of the Week")

Kayak is one of the most popular travel websites, and the Kayak App is listed as the #1 Mobile Travel App.

I don't think a day goes by that I don't use both the Kayak website and the Kayak App.  When I am researching  hotels, airports or car rentals (and When am I not researching travel?), it is where I begin my research.  I also receive daily "price alert" emails from Kayak for all the flights I am "watching."

According to the iTunes store, the Kayak App (which is free):

Includes flight and car search, hotel search and booking, flight tracker and My Trips, so you have your full itinerary at your fingertips. And of course, KAYAK is free.
- Compare flight, hotel and car rental deals
- Book your hotel, right in the app. Just choose KAYAK as your booking option
- Track your flight status
- View and manage your trip itinerary
- Look up baggage fees
- Access airline numbers and airport info

This week, Starbucks' Pick of the Week offers the Kayak Pro App (regularly 99 cents) for free.  (Yes, I know its only a buck, but isn't it nice to get the app for free?) The Kayak Pro App is basically the same as the regular Kayak App, except it also includes airport terminal maps for over 100 airports and is free of advertisements.

You can pick up the Pick of the Week card at any Starbucks.  The instructions for download are on the back of the card, together with a unique "Download Code" for use on iPods, iPhones and/or iPads.  Briefly, all you need to do is:

1. open the iTunes App Store
2. tap "featured" and scroll to bottom
3. tap redeem
4. enter the code
5. download the app
I am going to go to Starbucks and see if I can get some extra Pick of the Week cards.  So, if you are unable to find one of these Pick of the Week cards at your local Starbucks, leave a post below with your email address, and I'll provide you with a Download Code.

Manhattanhenge Returns this Wednesday & Thursday!

As you can see from this post, Manhatanhenge is making two rounds in NYC.  You can read all about it below, and also check out the photo I took from my rooftop on May 30th.

When the sky is clear, it is phenomenal.  When its not.... well, you know.  At present, the weather forecast for Wednesday is partly cloudy, and the forecast for Thursday is cloudy, with temperatures in the 80's (but we know how reliable weather forecasts are....).

Anyway, the second round of Manhattanhenge is this Wednesday and Thursday, July 11, 2012 and July 12, 2012.

If you can, try to get out and view it - it really can be breathtaking!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update: well there was nothing to view on May 29th due to clouds and rain, but this is the photo I caught from the rooftop of my Upper East Side apartment building at a little after 8 pm tonight, May 30, 2012.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Manhattanhenge is an awe-inspiring phenomenon that occurs twice yearly in New York City!

Assuming the weather cooperates, and it look like it will, tonight - May 29th -  a half sun will align itself with the city's 201-year-old grid at 8:17 PM, creating a wonderful view of the sunset along every street.   Tomorrow night, will be another night to behold, when a full sun will walk between New York skyscrapers at 8:16 PM (see: huffington post).

Sunset looking down 34th Street. One of two days when the sunset is exactly aligned with the grid of streets in Manhattan. Photo © Neil deGrasse Tyson, 2001

As described on the Hayden Planetarium website:

What will future civilizations think of Manhattan Island when they dig it up and find a carefully laid out network of streets and avenues? Surely the grid would be presumed to have astronomical significance, just as we have found for the pre-historic circle of large vertical rocks known as Stonehenge, in the Salisbury Plain of England. For Stonehenge, the special day is the summer solstice, when the Sun rises in perfect alignment with several of the stones, signaling the change of season.
For Manhattan, a place where evening matters more than morning, that special day comes twice a year. For 2012 they fall on May 29th, and July 12th, when the setting Sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan's brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough's grid. A rare and beautiful sight. These two days happen to correspond with Memorial Day and Baseball's All Star break. Future anthropologists might conclude that, via the Sun, the people who called themselves Americans worshiped War and Baseball.
For these two days, as the Sun sets on the grid, half the disk sits above and half below the horizon. My personal preference for photographs. But the day after, May 30th, and the day before, July 11, also offer Manhattanhenge moments, but at sunset, you instead will find the entire ball of the Sun on the horizon.

Here's another photo of Manhattanhenge, this one from Wikipedia:

42nd Street, July 13, 2006

According to Wikipedia, this phenomenon is not unique to New York City, but occurs in many cities with "grids":

The same phenomenon happens in other cities with a uniform street grid. Such occurrences would coincide with the vernal and autumnal equinox only if the grid plan were laid out precisely north-south and east-west, and perfectly aligned with true north as opposed to magnetic north. The situation in Baltimore, Maryland comes fairly close, with its sunrises on March 25 and September 18 and sunsets on March 12 and September 29.[4] In Chicago, Illinois, the setting sun lines up with the grid system on September 25, a phenomenon known similarly as Chicagohenge.[5] In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the setting sun lines up with the east–west streets on October 25 and February 16, a phenomenon known locally as Torontohenge.[6][7] In Montreal, Quebec, Canada, there may be a Montrealhenge each year on July 12.

Top 20 List ~ Contrasting Airplane Travelers with Marathon Runners

Running to catch a plane

In jest, I prepared a list of contrasts and similarities between the "Frequent Marathon Runner" (aka Maniac) on the one hand, and the "Frequent Airplane Flyer" on the other.

20. Maniacs look to collect stars,  flyers gaze out airplane windows at stars.

19. Both want strive to attain a precious metal or alloy level of status.  Maniacs climb up the ladder of precious metals beginning with bronze and ending with titanium. Flyers also want the precious climb from silver to gold to platinum, and eventually to diamond.

18. Neither likes running to catch a plane

17. Both are concerned about delays or cancellations due to weather

16. Both worry about the person in front of them coming into their space

15. Neither likes their neighbor's elbows.

14. Both want to soar, both want to take flight.

13. One wants priority boarding, the other wants priority staging

12. Flyers want upgrades, runners run up grades

11. Both get excited for take-off

10. The frequent flyer looks forward to drinks during the flight, the runner looks forward to drinks after the race.

9. Runners run hoping to "place," flyers travel to go "places"

8. Both speak of "Mileage Runs" (though they mean entirely different things)

7. The airplane lavatories and the porta-johns are similar in so many ways (except no one wants to "do it" in a marathon port-a-potty).

6. No one likes being at the very back.

5. The runner takes off his shoes after the run, the flyer takes off his shoes during the flight

4. Both walk kind of funny after hours of flying or running.

3. Maniacs travel in packs, flyers pack to travel

2. Maniacs do "doubles" (meaning 2 marathons in 2 days), frequent flyers do "Dos"

and..... last ........ drumroll please......

1.  Two words: Fuel Dumps.

To be a Maniac Marathoner and a Frequent Flyer

As previously mentioned, I've been fortunate enough (or crazy enough) to join my passion for running marathons with my passion for travel (and hold down a full time job at the same time).  So now that I've added crazy travel into my mix, my mother doesn't just say "you're NOT running that marathon, ARE YOU?" on a weekly basis, she now also says "you're not GOING AWAY this weekend again, ARE YOU?".  Sorry Mom, I probably am running THAT marathon and I'm probably GOING AWAY.

I belong to a number of running clubs. My local running club is the New York Flyers, a group of runners of all levels who are serious and yet social and supportive. I’ve been a "Flyer" for over 15 years. Its part of me.

I also belong to two "less than sane" (ok... insane) clubs filled with many wonderful, wacky mega-marathoners.

The 50 States Marathon Club is comprised of runners from around the United States (and beyond), who have completed, or are striving to complete, a marathon in all 50 States.  If one time around the 50 States is not daunting enough, try six or seven or eight times!  I've only completed "the States" once. Yes, I like these people because they make me look sane. They are also really nice.

Then, there are the Marathon Maniacs. This is a wonderful group of zany runners who give lunacy a new meaning. Look for example at their list of qualifications.  Or the list of levels of membership, beginning with bronze (aka one Star) going all the way to Titanium (10 Stars)!  (I am "only" 6 Stars - Osmium, having completed 16 marathons in 16 states in one year).

I also belong to a small running club in Maine, Crow Athletics.  This group thinks they are crows and greet one another by saying "Caw, Caw."  Yup, normal.  I also hope to join the 100 Marathon Club one day - perhaps as soon as early next year. Who knows?

finish line at the Great Cranberry Island 50K

I was thinking the other day of the similarities between crazy runners - such as the "50Staters" or "Maniacs" and frequent travelers/flyers, such as those in Milepoint and Flyertalk.  Those who travel the globe to see airports, to see lounges, to do "Mileage Runs" in order to accrue airline miles and thereby increase airline status.  My guess is that the two groups have a lot in common...

500 Hilton Honors Points for Listening to a 2 Minute Sales Pitch!

Just a day or two ago, I phoned Hilton to check on a reservation I have for this weekend.

Hugh, the helpful employee asked me if, at the end of the call, I'd like to be transferred to another Hilton representative to hear about a vacation offer and to receive 500 points "just for listening."   Without missing a beat, I said: "SURE."

I was then transferred to Sean, who told me of some interesting Hilton Vacation/Resort offers.  Two or three nights, at a choice of five different Hilton Resort properties, for some amazing price like $200 or less.  Honestly, the deals sounded great, but I'd have to fly to get to any of the properties, and frankly, I already have too much on my plate to commit to that (OMG, did I actually say that I have too many travel plans???).

Anyway, Sean was nice and not overly pushy or aggressive, as some of these sales persons are often known to be.  After an attempt or two, he said thank you and that I'd be getting the promised 500 Hilton Honors points just for listening.

This literally took 2 minutes and was a pleasant experience.

Those 50, or 100 or 1000 point bonuses actually add up.  I'm not saying sign up for netflix or alternative energy plans to get points when you don't want the service in the first place, but there are simple ways to earn points that are easy and advantageous.  If nothing else, they start the clock running anew on the expiration of points or miles.

So, I encourage you to take advantage of offers such as this, as well as shopping portals and dining programs.   They are easy ways to earn free points and miles.  (I am also fond of getting points by "checking in" on Foursquare and Topguest, but that will be discussed in a separate post).

Winners Announced: Athlete's Book of Home Remedies, by Jordan Metzl

We recently ran a contest for a giveaway of two copies of the new book by Dr. Jordan Metzl, entitled Athlete's Book of Home Remedies, published by Rodale, Inc.   In the POST, I asked for the readers to leave comments offering his/her suggestions on how they handle travel to competive events.  There were some great tips, including:

  • ensure adequate hydration
  • get to the location of the race a day or two before the event
  • bring compression gear
  • try to keep routine same as usual
  • if flying, reserve an aisle seat
  • stick to routine foods
  • bring snacks
  • keep your legs elevated as much as possible
  • bring "the stick" (though some complained that they've had "the stick" confiscated by TSA)
  • bring a sleep aid for the night before the marathon
  • pack comfortable sandles
Using http://www.random.org/, two winners were drawn: Jacqueline and Amanda (Run to the Finish).   Congratulations!!

And, if you didn't win, the book is reasonably priced, and well worth the investment.

Free download - CD by Walter Midi Group!!!

One year ago, the Walter Midi Group released its CD entitled "And Then You Woke Up."  It's great rock n roll - and, if you're a runner, you might enjoy loading the tunes on your iPod and going for a run.

The CD is available for sale in all the wonderful, usual places you'd expect: iTunes, CD Baby, etc.

However, the founder of the Walter Midi Group is so excited about the one-year anniversary, he is giving out digital downloads of the CD this weekend absolutely free!!

Yes, I said FREE. NO STRINGS ATTACHED!

Just leave a message here with your email address, or direct message me with your info on twitter @katruns26point2.

If you could also share on Facebook or Tweet "This weekend, get the cd by @WalterMidiGroup absolutely free at  http://www.willrunformiles.com/ @katruns26point2", (while not required), that would be most appreciated.

Mainly, the Walter Midi Group wants you to check out and enjoy the music, and to share it with others if you like it!

Thanks!!

Radisson Hotel's "Big Night Giveaway"

A few days ago, at this post, I discussed Club Carlson (the hotel loyalty program for Radisson Hotels, Country Inn and Suites, Park Plaza Hotels and Park Inn Hotels).

I indicated that a big promotion is on its way, and gave a code for additional points when joining Club Carlson.  Unfortunately, the link for the bonus 4,500 points for new members is no longer working, but I'm told that this code will give new members 2,000 points for signing up: NSB2K12 (hat tip to @Theinfamousdx on twitter).

The promotion has been announced and it's a great promotion - one I will take advantage of and highly recommend.

Actually, there are three promotions, for three of the Club Carlson family of hotels.

Radisson and Radisson Blu "Big Night Giveaway" - receive 50,000 Club Carlson points after registering and staying one night at a Radisson hotel between May 15th and July 15th (Limited to first 100,000 registrants)

Country Inn & Suites "Stay One Get One" Promotion - receive 44,000 Club Carlson points after registering and staying one night at a Country Inn & Suites between May 15th and July 15th (Limited to first 35,000 registrants)

Park Inn Hotels "One Plus One" Promotion - receive 44,000 Club Carlson points after registering and staying one night at a Park Inn hotel between May 22nd and July 22nd (Limited to first 20,000 registrants).

Registration for the Radisson and the Country Inn & Suites promotions begin at 12:00 a.m. CST (i.e., 1:00 a.m. on the East Coast) on May 15th, and for the Park Inn Hotels promotion at 12:00 a.m. CST (i.e., 1:00 am for New Yorkers) on May 22nd.  Each promotion requires separate registration.

Radisson - https://www.radissonbignightgiveaway.com/

Country Inn & Suites -  http://www.sogocountry.com/

Park Inn - http://www.parkinnoneplusone.com// (Link not yet live)

If you register for all three promotions, you can reap 138,000 points after only three stays. That's the equivalent of three nights at some of the "higher end" Radisson family properties, or more than 15 stays at many of the other Radisson hotels.  Plus, as I indicated in my prior post, these hotels often offer good "cash plus points" options.

For further details, I suggest looking at the posts by Mommypoints and Loyalty Traveler - and for ideas on how to make those 138,000 points into even more points, Frequent Miler.

I took advantage of a very similar promotion last year.  My qualifying night was the Radisson Airport hotel at Tucson Airport in December 2011 - having arrived in Arizona a few days before the Tucson Marathon.  It was a lovely suite hotel.  As a result, I earned 50,000 points.

So, set your clocks and let me know how you fared!

The Naked Man, Part Deux

As you may recall, about two weeks ago, I wrote about my flash run-in with a man in a certain state of undress in the sauna of a hotel.  The post is located here.  I was certain then, and am certain now, that his exposure was innocent, that he had no idea the facility was co-ed, that the Emperor's New Clothes was simply the result of a mistaken impression that the sauna was for men only.  As I saw it,  the nude guy simply missed the small sign on the sauna door indicating the room was co-ed and was genuinely surprised by the almost conical comical twist of events.

Well, as is often the case, the story did not end there.  Or should I say: "the plot thickens"?

A few days after my post, I received an email from the gentleman.  After I picked myself up off the floor, I read it.  The email confirmed to me his innocence and the fact that, underneath it all, he is a nice guy.  Obviously, he bared his soul (or more), and, yet was able to see the humor in the event.  Boy, did his email make me laugh.

I decided to share a few brief excerpts of the email:

".... I was the guy who met you in an unfortunate circumstance in NJ"

"..... I searched... on google today and found your post ... I was shocked that the title was about me"

"I wasn't sure if you actually saw anything of consequence, but based on your blog I guess you saw everything"

"I would like to apologize for putting you in that position -- I was certainly surprised but relieved you did not laugh or muffle laughter"

"You did not fake being impressed either! haha, just kidding"

Club Carlson (Radisson Hotels) -- Join and Get 4,500 Points!

I've been traveling so I haven't been able to post. While I was away, a big Promo at Club Carlson (the hotel loyalty program for Radisson Hotels, Country Inn and Suites, Park Plaza Hotels and Park Inn Hotels) was unfolding.  I really have to bring my iPad with me so I can blog on the run (pun intended).

You may or may not be familiar with the Radisson hotels, but I submit that you should be.  As a runner and traveler, I find that these hotels are good quality, yet often priced better than other equivalent hotels.  In addition to finding Radisson hotels centrally-located in many cities, there are often Radisson hotels near airports.  The Country Inn hotels are a good choice for groups or families because they are suite-hotels.
Also, the Radisson Blu hotels, many of which are located internationally, are very modern/funky/hip/popular.  When I went to Panama in December 2010, I stayed at the Radisson Decapolis, which I imagine is similar to one of the "Blu" hotels.  I loved it!

Additionally, when using points, there is often a "cash plus points" option - that can be a very advantageous choice.  For example, for the Marine Corps Marathon this coming October, I made a reservation at the Radisson Hotel Reagan National Airport in Arlington, VA for 10,000 points plus $77.  This is an excellent rate - especially given the fact that most of the hotels in the Arlington area raised their rates considerably for the marathon weekend.  Plus, I will be flying back home to NYC and the hotel offers a free airport shuttle.

The new promo is very similar to a promo I took advantage of last year, but even better - I highly recommend it.  I will be posting about this later today or tomorrow, but, in the meantime, the first step is to join Club Carlson and become an "e-rewards" member, if you are not already a member.

With this link, you can get 4,500 points just for joining!  The promo code is ERWD2012.  (Hat tip to Mommypoints who has been writing extensively on this promo).

As stated on the Club Carlson page, here are the benefits and conditions of membership:
As a new e-Rewards member, enroll in Club Carlson today and receive 4,500 bonus points just for joining.
Enjoy more points, more partners and more places with Club Carlson – the global hotel rewards program from Carlson Hotels.  As a Club Carlson member you will gain access to a collection of superior benefits at any of our more than 1,000 participating hotels worldwide:  Radisson®, Country Inns and Suites by CarlsonSM, Park Inn by Radisson®, and Park Plaza.
Club Carlson offers you:
  • Faster free nights starting at only 9,000 points.
  • No blackout dates for award nights on standard rooms.
  • Free Internet at Radisson® hotels worldwide and Carlson hotels in North America.
  • 20 Gold Points per U.S. dollar spent on eligible hotel nights as well as meals and beverages when charged to your room at participating hotels.
Enroll by May 31, 2012 to receive your 4,500 bonus points and be on your way to free award night stays.

Terms & Conditions:
e-Rewards members must enroll in Club Carlson using the link provided via email by e-Rewards by May 31, 2012 (“Promotional Period”). This offer is limited to a maximum of 4,500 bonus Gold Points per person. Offer only valid for new Club Carlson members without an existing account.  Promotional bonus Gold Points will be posted to the member’s Club Carlson account within 6-8 weeks of enrollment date.
